The Planetary System

We use the planetary system analogy to help explaining the architecture of the OMPlanet network ecosystem.

Here the nodes of the network are the OMPlanet platforms which are the planets. Each user, organization or a community can have its own hosted planet and it will belong to its community. In their planet the users can control their private data and applications of interaction.

Users will be able to interact with each other within their planet and as well with the users of other planets. OMPlanet has 1 to 12 different dimensions of interaction: such as social networking, file sharing, offering services, banking, etc. Users can interact as well cross-dimension wherever such interoperability will be made possible.

In order to increase the flow within the communities and enable seamless interaction, maximum number of such dimensions must be made interoperable within the OMPlanet ecosystem and whenever possible also with other open systems in the Web.

The advantages of the OMPlanet planetary system is that it is community-centric - each group of users controls its planet with their data and services, it is poly-centric - all the ecosystem is federated between different communities, and that it is interoperable - there are agreements between different dimensions of interaction within and between the planets and there are neutral bodies helping to create such agreements. This model contrasts with the cloud computing model where the data, applications and services are centralized in external cloud servers and millions of users are reduced to dependent controllable clients of few corporate cloud service providers.

Of course achieving interoperability of such complex community-based ICT platforms is a complex process involving various actors and challenges far beyond technical issues. We offer as a solution first to keep the space open for creativity and experimentation and second to invest in creating stronger and neutral standardisation bodies within the ecosystem and externally (such as W3C, ISO, etc).

Again using the planetary analogy here the standardisation body is the sun of the planetary system . The sun holds all the planets in the system in their orbits (provides the standards and common protocols of interaction). As the sun is only giving and not taking anything - the one who decides the rules should not be the one who benefits from it. While in contrast in the cloud model the rules can be dictated by the strong cloud providers themselves and as we know competing companies are not successful creating rules that is beneficial for all parties if they have the chance to create one which is beneficial only for them.
